Water Vole Conservation

Text Box: Background

Text Box: The water vole is now considered to be the most rapidly declining mammal in Britain. In Fife the population is estimated to have declined by 75% from 1996 records. Despite being given legal protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 the species continues to decline.
Water voles are included in Fife’s Local Biodiversity Action Plan in two ways:
Species Action Plan
The main objectives under the Species Action Plan
Maintain and enhance the current distribution and population of water voles in Fife.
Ensure appropriate management of water courses and wetland habitats to facilitate the above.
Habitat Action Plan
The main delivery project under the ‘Rivers’ Habitat Action Plan. (One of five habitat Action Plans.)
